EBN Artist Next Up: NyukYung

Where are you from?: I was born in Tacoma, WA, but currently making music out of Vancouver, Canada.

How long have you been making music?: I have been making music since I was 8, currently 24, but started doing it professionally about a year ago.

What are some trials and tribulations you go through as an artist?: As an artist, I found that my biggest struggles come from the mental aspect. I have a big sports background, so I am competitive by nature and I carried that mentality over into my music. I tend to overthink things and put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed. In times of struggle, I really look to my team for support.

Do you feel like you’ve developed your sound?: After years of doing music, I created a unique sound with one of my best friends and producer Phuoc “Lomax” Nguyen called Trap Harmonix. It is a combination of hard-hitting lyrics, fast flows, harmonies, and trap beats that Lomax and I mastered.

Describe your musical style in three words: Passionate, honest, and hectic.

If you had to write a novel based on your life what would the name of it be?: I would entitle the novel “No Ceilings” as I realized at an early age the only person holding me back from success is myself.

What is a quote that you were told or that you came up with that you will never forget?: “Everybody is happy when things are going your way but the true test of a man’s character is when God tells you no. Fall in love with the process and not the outcome”.

Who are the artists that influenced you to make music?: As a kid, I looked up to Eminem, 50 Cent, T-Pain, and Chris Brown. I would say these artists influenced my sound today and helped create Trap Harmonix.

What is some advice you’d give to an independent artist trying to develop their sound?: Don’t stop. Do something every day to move yourself forward whether that be writing lyrics, reading a book, trying a new promotional method, it really doesn’t matter. Never stop learning because the truth is you will always have something you can learn.
